Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made an unannounced visit to Libya to congratulate the Muslim Brotherhood-sponsored terrorist’s revolution to oust Qaddafi.
It’s hard to tell who is lesser of these two evils.
The second meeting was arranged to put pressure on Afghanistan’s leadership to reconcile with Taliban fighters in order to stabilize the region. The only problem is that the Taliban has shown no interest in reconciling with the Karzai government.
They highlighted their opposition by killing Burhanuddin Rabbani, who was the head of the outreach movement to get the Taliban to renounce al-Qaida and become a part of a Democratic Afghanistan.
It’s no secret the Taliban want their Islamic Republic back without any opposition and have no interest in compromises.
Ms. Clinton emphasized the Obama administration’s support for reconciliation and went as far to hold secret negotiation with the Taliban behind the back of Afghanistan’s leadership. President Karzai has insisted that making peace with the Taliban is futile. Somehow the tone deaf Hillary Clinton still insists on reconciliation. Pressing a government to deal with a people who live by the doctrine of taqiyya, (the doctrine by which Muslims may hide their religious beliefs to help achieve a goal) such gestures with a determined terrorist organization would be suicidal.
This naïve approach is being seen as a sign of weakness by the Haqqani terrorist network. It is encouraging them to step up coordinated attacks in Afghanistan.
There has been no serious effort by the Obama administration to pressure Pakistan to stop the insurgency into Afghanistan. It’s unlikely that the Pakistan regime will stop any attacks against their Muslim neighbors because Afghanistan formed a strategic partnership with Pakistan’s archenemy, India.
Pakistan sees Afghanistan as it’s backyard and does not like any foreign interests so close to its borders. It definitely does not want to have India have a greater presence in the region.
The secretary is calling for a regional conference in Istanbul attended by Afghanistan and surrounding countries. Such meeting will lead to nothing because of Karzai’s partnership with India and the question of where to locate any future NATO troops in the region.
This administration seems oblivious to the dynamics in the region because very little progress has been made during the last three years.
