Reverend Terry Jones is the pastor of a small church with big ambition. While his flock only numbers 50, he calls his ministry “Dove World Outreach Center.” Located in Gainesville, FL, Jones decided he would like his name and his ministry forever linked with book burning.
In his case, the book he intends to burn is the rambling monologue dictated by Muhammad, the founder of Islam, also known as the Quran. The burning is planned for September 11, the anniversary of al-Qaeda’s attack on America. Jones says it will “send a message to radical Islam that we will not tolerate their behavior.” But what message will he really send?
Well, if he is a publicity seeker, Jones has succeeded. His picture is all over the TV. World leaders are denouncing him. Across the Islamic world, jihadists are chanting “Death to Christians,” as they burn the American flag. He is currently a household name.
But what is he doing for the Christian beliefs he allegedly has made his life’s work to advance? Is he representing the values and message of Jesus?
Jesus was outspoken about how to respond to evil. In Matthew 5:38-40 Jesus says: “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well.”
Saint Paul in Romans 12:14-20 makes the same point: “Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse…Live in harmony with one another…Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay,’ says the Lord. On the contrary: ‘If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.’ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”
We believe Rev. Jones has the right to burn a Quran. We live in a free country, and it is legal to burn just about anything if you own it. The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guarantees the right of Jones to burn the Quran. It also guarantees the right of Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf to build his Victory Mosque near Ground Zero on private land.
Neither of these two actions is prudent and necessary. We agree with Sarah Palin and believe this book burning is “insensitive and an unnecessary provocation — much like building a mosque at Ground Zero.”
Palin continued in her Facebook posting: “I would hope that Pastor Terry Jones and his supporters will consider the ramifications of their planned book-burning event. It will feed the fire of caustic rhetoric and appear as nothing more than mean-spirited religious intolerance. Don’t feed that fire. If your ultimate point is to prove that the Christian teachings of mercy, justice, freedom, and equality provide the foundation on which our country stands, then your tactic to prove this point is totally counter-productive.”
Jones remains defiant, “As of right now, we are not convinced that backing down is the right thing.” If he won’t listen to Sarah Palin, Gen. David Petraeus, Pope Benedict XVI, or any of the other world leaders calling for him to stop, then let’s hope in the days before 9/11 he reads his Bible, prays and reconsiders striking a match that could start an uncontrolled fire.
I'm not sure who is worse: Islamic extremists, or cowardly Christians. Christ took very strong stands, according to the Bible. He even flipped over tables, out of anger, when he drove the money changers out of the temple. The Quran burning was nothing more than a demonstration against Islamic extremists. Christians have become entirely too complacent today. They are mocked, ridiculed, and portrayed in every perverted way on television, and nothing is said by the Muslim community in their defense. Yet, the majority of those speaking out about the planned Quran burning have been Christians. This gives me great pause.

You may remember back in the 90's when Dr. Greg Dixon at the Indianapolis Baptist Temple was excoriated by the media and "mainline" Christians for his stand against the IRS. I have to disagree with you on this issue. All the world leaders are bowing to Islamic radical pressure. We have turned our check so often that we have no face left. Throughout the ages the Islamics have destroyed Synagogues, Cathedrals and Churches. They build their Mosques over the ruins to solidify their dominance. There is no way we should let them build a Mosque of that scale within a mile of Ground Zero. I suspected this guy didn't have the balls to follow through on the Koran burning. After all, our side ALWAYS caves to Muslims. I think its terrible that he is not going through with it. By making such a huge issue of burning the Koran and failing to follow through has only made matters worse. The barbarians have been victorious. Now they know their threats of violence can cause us to submit to their will. And you can be sure they will employ such threats in the future to get us to back down regarding any criticism of Islam or whatever else they find offensive.

This is a legal/Constitutional issue. Christ also said "Render to Caesar …" Well, Caesar says the pastor acts in full accord with his 1st Amendment rights, inalienable & endowed by the Creator.
Those who would seek to confiscate this right gives Caesar power over the Creator and may feel the sting themselves, one day.

I think if pastor Jones feels he is being lead by God to burn the Quran, he should call a press conference and place the Quran on a steel sheet and pray to God for the Quran to burn. If it is what God wants, it will burn. If it doesn't burn, then the God of the Bible is consistent as a God of Love and Peace and doesn't consider it necessary to burn the Quran. Jones should invite a radical Muslim to do the same thing with a Bible calling for Allah to burn it. If it doesn't burn, that would be inconsistent with what the Quran's Allah calls for of his followers. In either case the Muslim loses. Unless of course the Bible burns. FAT CHANCE!!

Jesus walked in love always, but sometimes that was a tough love. The majority of Muslims who are here have no intention of actually assimilating and living as real Americans. They are sneaking around in the dark and trying to bring America under Sharia law. This is not only bad manners, it is sedition and treason. Their Koran has ZERO archeological verification, as our Bible has. Many, many events in the Bible, and many people mentioned, have been shown to actually exist, as proven by artifacts and independent ancient writings. The Koran has NOTHING to independently recommend it.

If you really love someone you are obligated to tell them the truth. No person of any intelligence who takes their Christianity can have any respect for the Koran as a holy book.
