Obama’s Gun Grab? It’s a Matter of Time

by Doug Book

“Although President Obama ran on campaign vows of reinstating the assault weapons ban and closing the gun-show loophole…he’s been all but mute on those issues since entering the White House.” So laments the writer of a post-Tucson article in The Hill. The author is not alone in his belief that Obama has betrayed the Left by apparently abandoning his gun-grabbing ways. The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence gave him an “F” in 2010, citing “extraordinary silence and passivity” on the part of its disappointing champion.

And make no mistake, Obama’s anti-Second Amendment credentials were, for years, beyond reproach. In 1996, in response to the question “do you support state legislation to…ban the manufacture, sale and possession of handguns,” Obama responded “Yes.”

In 1998, as an Illinois State Senator, Obama supported a ban on the sale and transfer of all semi-automatic weapons. In 1999 he voted for “smart-gun” technology, which would have made it impossible for anyone but the original owner to fire a particular weapon. He also voted for a bill making the owner of a stolen gun responsible for any crime committed with that weapon.

In 2000 he sponsored legislation limiting the purchase of handguns to one per month. In 2003 he voted “Yes” on a ban of “most…privately held shotguns, target rifles and Black Powder rifles in Illinois.” If passed, law enforcement officers could have forcibly entered homes to confiscate these firearms.

Two years later, Obama voted to allow lawsuits against gun manufacturers for the misuse of their products. Of course, he has always favored requiring gun owners to be licensed and registered with the government, complete with fingerprint and photo records. And he has always been against the right of concealed carry, recommending passage of a federal act to prevent it.

Given this superior record of thoroughly unconstitutional behavior and liberty-trampling sentiment, one can hardly blame the Left for its current sense of discontent. But liberals should not be concerned about the apparent change in their hero’s convictions. Obama is undoubtedly still the anti-gun zealot of his earlier days. He was able to sneak into the White House in 2008 thanks to the 24/7 support and cover provided by an adoring media, a healthy dose of “white guilt,” an anti-gun platform, and the pathetic efforts of a weak challenger.

The Regime knows 2012 will represent a much tougher road to holding on to power. Most Americans already mistrust Obama, and antagonizing the 125 million Americans who own guns would not be smart. Expect Obama to bide his time and put another Marxist clone on the Supreme Court to eliminate our right to keep and bear arms in a second term, something which won’t be accomplished if at least a few gun owners can’t be suckered into giving him that second term.
